Zotac ZBOX Sphere OI520 Death Star Case Mod
Issue two, where do I get the power for the lights? Most everything is custom made to plug in with mini connectors and such and the power supply is a laptop brick. So I looked around, got out my trusty voltage multimeter and found where the DC voltage was accessible on the motherboard. Three pins where right where the power plugged into and I got a reading of 19 VDC. This was good news as it meant I could keep all the power wiring inside the case.
I found some white LED’s that needed 14 VDC to be supplied them to make them light up. Again great news as all I needed to do was add a resistor to each light to help limit the voltage from 19 to 14 or just below it. I used a couple pieces of project board to mount the LED’s to and to run the power to. A bracket was made up to hold the lighting and to help direct the LED’s to fill up the inside of the case with light.
I solder the wired to power post…
Plugged in everything and it all worked.
I pretty much duplicate the what I did before, but this time I mounted the LED’s on a piece of aluminum and attached it to a support brace at the bottom of the Zotac OI520.
Next up was to get the orb ready for paint. Some fine grit sand paper and elbow grease I roughed up the inside and the outside of the case. I cleaned both sections and then applied some adhesion promoter to give the primer a better base to cling to since the case is all plastic.
The inside of the orb got a final paint finish of silver to help reflect the lighting inside.
The outside got a coat of grey primer then a coat of light grey.
Utterly impressed by this, best Mini PC mod I have ever seen. Need to get me one of these system.
