Also included with the AX51 headset is the AC Power Supply, and a nice cloth carrying bag. When it comes to transporting the AX51’s back and forth to a LAN event, the cloth carrying bag will come in handy keeping the headset and its power supply together.
The Tritton AX51 Gaming Headset is a full-size headset. As I stated earlier, they look identical to the AXPC headset that I previously reviewed. Probably one of the best features is the fact that you can easily fold up the AX51’s to transport them to and from LAN events. The Metallic Green color being unique, should also help you stand out in the crowd of gamers. The AX51’s are a true 5.1 headset, which means if you’re not listening to something that is recorded in 5.1, you’re not going to hear it across all eight of the speakers.
To fold the AX51’s up, you will want to extend the ear cups out completely, and then gently fold each of the ear cups up toward the center of the headset. You will want to make sure to watch your cord. You don’t want to kink the cord where it goes into the left ear cup. Doing so could cause a break in the wires at that location.
Extending or shortening the height of the ear cups is as simple as either pulling out or pushing in gently on the upper part of the headrest. They are notched and will have a light click as they slid in and out.
The upper headrest on the Tritton AX51 headset is generously padded and flexible to adjust to the head. Like the AXPC’s, I do wish that they applied just a touch more pressure. If you tip your head back to far, you will find yourself quickly reaching for them before they fall completely off your head. As a manufacture, this is one of the areas where you will have to walk a fine line. Making them apply to much pressure will cause them to be uncomfortable, while not enough pressure will leave them falling off your head.
The ear cups are well padded and fit completely over the outer ear. With the open housing design, you are going to hear some of the outside noise passing through the headset, while at the same time, anyone around you is going to hear what you’re listening to if you have it loud enough. Again, this is one of the areas that might make or break a headset. Personally, I have always liked the sound of the closed cup headsets, but also hated that after wearing them so long in one sitting your ears start sweating.
The microphone utilizes gold plated jacks to ensure the best possible connection. The microphone does have a fairly thick cable going from one end to the other. It is very flexible while it’s still capable of retaining its position.
