Patriot Viper V560 Mouse Review

How Did it Perform?

I can say with confidence that the Patriot Viper V560 is a comfortable and capable mouse for browsing and gaming use. In addition to the side buttons, it is also has wheel tilting function, a feature which for some reason is not available on many gaming mice these days. This tilt-wheel is useful for strafe functions, coupled with the customizable buttons, makes it very useful even in games that naturally limit mouse button input (such as some RPG games). The sensor is undoubtedly an Avago 9800 judging by its 8200 DPI reach. This is a fairly popular laser sensor option for this price range used by the CM Storm Mizar mouse as well, previously reviewed here.

It automatically installed on my Windows machines, and was working as a standard mouse in a matter of minutes due to its plug and play nature. Additional features are accessible after installing Patriot’s software such as mouse acceleration and angle snapping toggle. Since it is an Avago 9800 laser sensor, the  X and Y axis can be set independently as well. The majority of the buttons are easy to manipulate and customize, the mouse fits snugly in large hands, and the sensor is very responsive as conducted on a Thermaltake Colossal Pyrrhus Speed Edition cloth mousepad.

The adjustable weights and side grips allow for different play and grip styles, especially for the ring finger and the pinkie. The ergonomic design of the Patriot V560 however is strictly for right handed users. The five ceramic pads slide smoothly over cloth surfaces, and the mouse’s ergonomic shape is comfortable for long gaming sessions. One of the detachable side-grip jamming and unbalanced footpads leave me slightly worried about the build quality, but the 2-year warranty means that any issues can be resolved by the manufacturer.

Unlike other mice which use PTFE, ceramic is more resistant to wear and warping. The buttons aren’t too sensitive or too coarse, with an appropriate level of actuation. The onboard lights are also helpful for identifying what onboard macro is being used. All of these combined make the Viper V560 a capable, comfortable, and very customizable gaming mouse.
