By using the Noctua solution, you shave overall height of the cooling solution down lower than most memory that you would install! If you have memory with attached heat spreaders, the memory will likely be taller than the cooler. My generic DIMMS in the picture below, if it were a perfect profile shot, you would see the upper lip of the fan housing.

 When compared to the i3’s retail heatsink, you can really make out the better use of surface area, as well as the difference in height.

You get a lower profile cooler with a larger fan (92mm from Noctua vs 80mm from the retail intel heatsink)

If you have a square area around the CPU, a square cooler is going to fit that area better… it just makes sense. No wasted space. “Fill it with fins, and blow some air on it!”
