Kingston HyperX Savage SSD Review: SATA Beast Mode
Final Thoughts
The HyperX Savage SSD is probably the best looking SSD around which is quite weird considering most SSDs are low-visibility devices, tucked in inside notebooks and systems. For modders however, the sleek design serves as an inspiration and the red/black theme fits well in most custom systems (especially in ASUS RoG-based rigs). The construction is also top notch and should it ever fail within 3-years, Kingston has it covered under warranty and provides free technical support. Compared to some top SATA drives however such as Sandisk’s Extreme Pro at the same price which carries a 10-year warranty, it is not nearly as long although it is within expected warranty range of other current S10-based drives such as Corsair’s Neutron XT and Patriot’s Ignite which both have a 3-year warranty as well.
For most people however, looks are not important but thankfully the Kingston Savage SSD is more than just a pretty face with consistently high sequential read and writes as promised. As is often the case, the promised 560/530MB/s read/write is based on ATTO benchmarks and the HyperX does indeed reach that and a little bit beyond. The bundle kit is a very good all-in-one option for only $10 more than the drive-only package. The Acronis software key with the UBS 3.0 external enclosure as well as the precision toolkit are ready to use right out of the box and will make upgrading or migrating system swift. Unlike the HyperX 3K kit, there is no disc included in the bundle, which is understandable since many systems do not have disc drives anymore so the software can only be accessed via downloading online so users will need a fully running web-connected system prior to migration.
The HyperX Savage SSD performance is more than worthy replacement to the HyperX 3K with its Phison S10 controller compared to the aging Sandforce SF-2281. The consistency and performance is much better even with incompressible data and is smart with a lot of tricks up its sleeve such as end-to-end data protection, SmartFlush and GuaranteedFlush power-loss protection. This is not the kind of beast that is a drooling mess but it is a disciplined tool that does what its told quickly and efficiently.
