Oh, before we go any farther let me point out that the RAM modules is just a little bit taller than the heat sink/fan setup. It is about a 1/16th of an inch higher. The reason I state this is that I have come across others that stick well above the other stuff and really misleads you in your thought process when creating that custom case or slimline case you are looking at.
During testing I wanted to see how well the passive cooler worked for the CPU so I loaded up the Intel Atom CPU with Prime95 and SuperPI mod 1.5. From the base temperature of 34c (after running idle for two hours) the CPU only got as high as 41c. It was this stable for over an hour with this kind of testing. Not bad at all, now with a fan I bet it would do much better. But I will tell you this the fan on the smaller heat sink does make some noise so adding another on would defeat the lower noise purpose. So how does it perform, actually not bad at all for the what it is intended to do and that is to be a low powered self contained unit. PCMARK 05

I also jumped onto Hulu.com to see how it handle streaming of large files from the internet and it was just about how I thought it would be. At the default size screens the video was fluid and looked great, but as the video were moved to the pop-out and the resizing began it did start to get a bit choppy though it was still watchable. Next I jumped over to watch some video off my home file server and well it was much better that that from the internet. I used a 720i HD test clip of the Terminator 2 movie and it was quite smooth at full screen. The final test was to drop in the Batman Dark Knight DVD and see how it did…it was flawless and smooth. |
