Cryorig R1 Ultimate Review: The Cooling Force of Mass + Acceleration

Closer Look at the CRYORIG R1 Ultimate »

CRYORIG R1 UltimateHaving a large surface area to transfer heat into is an easy solution when creating a CPU air cooler. There has been a lot of demand for smarter designs over the past few years however, incorporating  creative solutions that squeezes cooling efficiency further on smaller space to create greater thermal headroom. For CRYORIG’s flagship R1 Ultimate CPU cooler, the solution was in the form of accelerated exhaust side in addition to having a massive body. Utilizing a dual-section fin array, the seven-heatpipe dual-tower cooler has tighter gaps in the rear side compared to the intake side in order to dissipate heat faster.

Like most dual-tower coolers currently available, the CRYORIG R1 comes bundled with a pair of PWM fans but in order to provide as much clearance for tall memory modules, the heatpipes are offset and leaning towards the back. CRYORIG also has a clearance-oriented variant of the R1 bundled with slim fans called the CRYORIG R1 Universal, while the R1 Ultimate is meant to be the top performer for CPUs with 250W TDP or greater.

CRYORIG has a uniform packaging for their coolers, having a black and white color theme with blue accent so the R1 Ultimate’s box looks similar to the previously reviewed H5 and H7 coolers, but much larger. Specifications are printed at the back including measurement of dimensions which is essential for anyone buying this cooler at a brick and mortar store.

CRYORIG R1 Ultimate

The R1 Ultimate heatsink itself comes cradled inside the center with folded cardboard on all four sides and with the 140mms fan pre-installed. The accessories are stored in a separate box on top and individually packaged inside.

The bundled CRYORIG XF140 fan comes pre-installed with its own set of fan clips and one more set is included for users who want to add a third fan in a pull configuration. The corner mounts for the bundled fan have built-in padding for vibration absorption and an extra set is also bundled for the third optional fan. Also included is an alcohol pad for cleaning the contact surface prior to installation.

A full-size CRYORIG CP7 thermal paste is also included in the accessory pack as well as documentation which includes an English and Japanese installation manual with an alternate German and Polish version, as well as a product registration card completely sealed in an anti-static bag.

Signing up as VIP (free) and registering the product on CRYORIG’s website doubles the standard warranty, extends customer support as well as render the user eligible for VIP member prize draws. Standard warranty for CRYORIG’s coolers is 3-years which means registered products get a total of a lengthy 6-year coverage.

The CRYORIG R1 Ultimate also has a fairly comprehensive CPU socket mounting support, featuring LGA1366, LGA775 and LGA2011 compatibility on top of the AMD and Intel 115x support typical of most coolers currently. Since it comes with two PWM fans out of the box, CRYORIG also provides a PWM fan header splitter.
