CES 2007 (Like a kid in a candy store)
One of my stops took me too ASUS where you must have a press pas to enter. I was walked around and shown and told in detail of the all the items that they had on display. Remember I told you about talking to important people, as I was directed over to another section a gentlemen asked us about how to translate the meaning of “syndication”. After a brief talk and thank you, the guy I was with told me “That was the CEO of ASUS and he just flew in this morning for the event”. “I wondered why you where nervous” I told him.
ASUS has a cool device that will allow laptop users to use the latest and greatest videos cards just like PC user can. The case is about 4 inches high and is a little wider and longer than a graphics card with a control dial and a graphical display.
Inside the case is a regular PCIE graphics card that can be removed and upgraded when needed. The control knob on the outside can be used to do different things to the card like change the fan speed and yes even overclocking. The card inside the external case was a 7800 and was running 3DMark05 smoothly.
In order to use the 7800 you have to connect your laptop to the device and then connect the external card to a separate monitor. This was a demo version of the setup so I am sure there will be a few tweaks and upgrades to this awesome idea.
Geil Memory also had something new they are working on displayed. What they are trying to do is to no longer use the motherboards to supply the power to the memory chips. On the right side of the module would be a plug, like the one used for floppy drives, and the PSU would power the chips directly. Circled on the left side is yet another idea. Since you will not be supplying the voltage through the motherboard then you would not need to go into the BIOS to play with the volts. You will be able to adjust the voltage on the chip itself. The chip would also included some sort of heat pipe for cooling
