ASUS RT-AC1200GU WiFi Router Review

« Observations and Speed Tests

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a budget friendly WiFi router with a lot of features, then the ASUS RT-AC1200GU might be a right fit for you. From my short experience with ASUS RT-AC1200GU I had no drop outs while working on 2.5GHz and 5GHz connections. Most of my devices at home are N-based and with the ASUS RT-AC1200GU there were no issues of streaming or gaming. I have faced a small issue with AC protocol and was not able to connect to the router with my ASUS PCE-AC68 adapter. Despite this issue I strongly think that this device has lots to offer at an affordable price.

The ASUS RT – AC1200GU has for port switch on the back that is 10/100/1000Mbps. So if you have small devices like printers and NAS devices they can be plugged in directly in to the router.

What I really liked in the ASUS RT – AC1200GU is the software features it has to offer. I found highly advanced sections of the configurations that could be tweaked depending on the need. Each Advanced tab in the GUI was dedicated to that particular section. For example if you are looking for WAN advanced configurations such as DNS Problem Failure count it would be in the Advanced WAN section. Firewall section of this router has some features for a home user to be able to protect internal networks. The majority of features in this firewall are to restrict or prevent a specific URL or service use. If you are looking for a stronger firewall features look elsewhere.

What I also found helpful in the AC1200GU is the support for IPv6. As we are running out of IPv4 addresses in the world so it is nice to know that small routers like this have full DHCP and firewall support for the future of addressing.

Currently ASUS RT-AC1200GU retails for about $72 USD (MSRP). It was released by ASUS only for the Chinese market but available for import into the US or anywhere else around the world via GearBest with free shipping options. The price vs value ratio of ASUS RT – AC1200GU is 50:50. I think you do get what you pay for however, for the price I think it is a great home WiFi Router device with limited but important features.
