ASUS DVD-RW DRW-24B1ST Optical Drive
Testing & Conclusion |
To handle the testing side I downloaded the latest version of Nero’s DiscSpeed. It comes with an easy-to-use benchmarking tool to test the operational capabilities of any optical drive.
The tests we will be using are Transfer Rate, Burst Rate, Access Time, CPU Usage, Spin Up/Down Time, and Load/Eject Time. We will also be using the Disc Quality feature to test CD’s and DVD’s burned from both the Asus DVD DRW-24B1ST and the comparison drive.
The closest comparable drive I had on hand was a Lite-On iHAS220 drive. Although they do not carry the exact same specs, we can see that the drives performance was very similar. The Asus DRW-24B1ST did edge out the Lite-On when it came time for the Spin Up/Down, and Load/Eject times. Also keep in mind that the Asus DRW-24B1ST does it while consuming less power when utilizing the Asus E-Green technology.
When taking a look at the burn times on the two drives. We see that we achieved a slightly faster burn time on the CD side with the Asus drive, while on the DVD side the Lite-On took a small lead.
However, when we look at the quality of the burn using Nero DiscSpeed’s Disc Quality feature we show the drives performing equally on the CD burns. On the DVD side we see the Asus drive boasting a considerable advantage over the Lite-On drive.
The Asus DRW-24B1ST also performed well when it came to noise side. I know we’ve all had the opportunity of listening to a drive that sounded like a jet engine at take off. Although I wouldn’t really say that my Lite-On drive is loud, but when compared to the Asus drive it was. The Asus drive also showed to have less vibrations transferring through the system compared to the Lite-On. Conclusion The Asus DRW-24B1ST has shown to be a very capable optical drive. Not only will it offer you good performance, it will save you money at the same time. The CD and DVD burning times are respectable, and the quality of the burns are exceptional. Really, what more could one ask for out of an optical drive? Don’t forget you get the option of using Asus E-Hammer to permanently erase those old CD-RW and DVD-RW discs. Sure there are going to be faster drives out there. Coming in at less than $20 in most places one really can’t go wrong purchasing the Asus DRW-24B1ST. |
