The question that has been asked the most for decades is finally answered. Is there a right way to apply thermal paste on your CPU cooler? Did we finally figure out this question? To try and do it the right way we knew that we had to test it on an actual motherboard with a CPU installed. Using SketchUp we designed and printed a rig that we thought would be easy to use and strong enough for all the testing, and give us the same results when installing a CPU cooler. A piece of clear Lexan that is 6mm thick was used as the window to view the thermal paste being spread out over the CPU. Being as thick as it is it would allow us to apply the correct amount of pressure without any flex. The thermal paste that was used for our testing was the Noctua NT-H1 which is a fairly common style of paste used when installing any CPU cooler. We tried many different ways to see if thickness or shapes would make any difference in how the thermal paste would spread out. What we think you will find interesting is that the shape of the paste did come into play when it was pressed down.
