eSports teams are being bought by NFL, NBA and Soccer
Looks like eSports has finally made the big time with major sporting teams buying eSports teams. According to a post on Yahoo Finance they state that “Data from video game specialized research firm SuperData found the eSports industry generated $892.8 million in revenue 2016. SuperData projected the industry will break the $1 billion mark in 2017“. For NFL teams like the Dallas Cowboys that made $700 million dollars in 2016. Buying a eSport teams for a few million is nothing when the small investment could double or triple in return revenue in a few years. The Dallas Cowboys’ senior VP of brand marketing Matt O’Neil, told AdAge. “If we could buy a team for $2 million, $3 million, $5 million or whatever, but get $7 million in sponsorship deals over the next couple years it becomes a no-brainer,”
There has already been purchases of eSport teams by other well known teams such as the NBA’s Philadelphis 76ers . The Houston rockets have hired a Director of eSports in December of 2016. In Europe three soccer teams Valencia FC, FC Schalke 04, and West Ham United has created their own teams. Celebrities and past athletes have also joined in on the investing of eSports. Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal and Mark Cuban (owner of the Dallas Mavericks) have taken the plunge into the rising popularity and revenue generating sport. Even ESPN has created a eSports division
So how much money can you make at playing video games? According to esportsearnings the top 26 players in the world has made at least $1,000,000 and up. The number one money maker, Saahil Arora: A.K.A. UNiVeRse, has made a mere $2,720,623.84. Funny thing is that we have all heard at one point or time “quit playing those damn games and get a real job”! I am sure that will soon change to “Why aren’t you playing more, get back in your room and keep practicing”.
